How can I recognise dry eyes?
Itching, burning, a foreign-body sensation – some people are very familiar with these symptoms. However, if the problems keep recurring or even become permanent, then this can be a clear sign of the disease "dry eyes", also known as sicca syndrome.
Complaints Typical symptoms of dry eyes
If the ocular surface is not sufficiently lubricated with tear fluid, your eyes will start to burn, itch and become red. In addition, your eyelids may become red or even swollen. Sometimes, there is a feeling of having a foreign body or a grain of sand in your eye when blinking. Dry eyes can also cause your eyes to water because, if the tear film is unstable, the tear fluid can no longer adhere to the surface of the eye. After waking up in the morning, your eyelashes may become sticky or encrusted. Light sensitivity or visual disturbances can also be triggered by chronically dry eyes. If your eyes often feel tired and irritated, this alone can be a sign of dry eyes.
