Hormonal changes

The hormonal balance changes constantly throughout life. Women in particular are subject to strong hormonal fluctuations during pregnancy or the menopause, which can have a major effect on tear production and thus eye protection, among other things.

Pregnancy Dry eyes due to altered hormonal balance

During pregnancy, a woman's body changes within a few months to be fully prepared for the needs of the growing baby and the approaching birth. This also causes a major change in her hormonal balance which can be associated with unpleasant side effects. Apart from heartburn, sleep disturbances and heavy legs, dry eyes also often occur. The tear film often changes during pregnancy, becoming thinner and therefore rupturing more easily. In some women, even the production of tear fluid is severely reduced, which can also result in the typical symptoms of dry eyes, such as itching, burning or redness.

Menopause Reduced oestrogen levels affect the tear glands

The menopause is a time of major upheaval in the life of a woman. Due to decreasing oestrogen levels, many changes take place in the body which can manifest themselves through typical symptoms such as sweating or sleep problems. Another effect of the hormonal change can be alterations to the skin and mucous membranes, but dry eyes can also become an unpleasant problem as a result. The tear glands produce less fluid, and the composition of the tear film changes. This causes the protective film to break down more quickly, leaving the surface of the eye dry. This can result in itching, burning or red eyes. However, lubricating eye drops can alleviate the symptoms.
